On a trip to Arundel Castle, one of our team stumbled upon a rather grim sight – a tomb containing the remains of a nobleman, John Fitzalan. John’s is no ordinary tomb; it looks like a bunk bed. In the top bunk, a finely-carved gentleman. But the bottom bunk? A spooky scary skeleton. A bit macabre, but the guide explained that this type of tomb is called a ‘Memento Mori’ and symbolises that we’re all equal in death. In Latin, Memento Mori means “remember that you have to die”. It’s heavy, but it’s a reminder to live while you can.
